ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents data from the two maternity wards, one at each hospital. Health care services are characterised by the increasing use of sophisticated equipment, new technology and demands for efficient treatment and better care for a steadily rising number of patients. The author explores the mechanisms shaping resilience in maternity services in two Norwegian hospitals. By applying the four cornerstones of resilience, they will identify what mechanisms maternity wards use for anticipation, monitoring, response and learning in their daily work and discuss how others can adopt these mechanisms to promote resilience. They compare the two maternity wards to explore patterns of importance across different contexts. In order to analyse patterns across the hospitals, the results from the two maternity wards were later put into an across-case analysis. Criteria for selection of meso level interviews was that the informant had to be affiliated with the maternity ward and/or have a position in patient safety.
