ABSTRACT

Unlike the other plays in this book, Dancing with the Clown of Love is inspired by an ancient Greek myth, not a drama. The show’s theme heard frequently throughout the piece was: “All illness is not death.” Providing the context for that theme was the Greek myth of the Morae, the Three Fates. The spinner, the weaver, and the cutter of the thread of life that determined a human’s fate were used throughout in movement, gesture, and story. The women from the HIV clinic, who have managed to live and thrive for decades following diagnosis, challenged the misconception that HIV/AIDS was a death sentence. For these women, being HIV positive was another way to live. Prior to the development of what was to become Dancing with the Clown of Love, The Medea Project had already amassed a body of eight fully fledged stage productions.
