ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors use their lived experiences to reflect on the making of their gendered identity and the paths they took to their feminisms through the disciplines of sociology and women’s studies. While experiences may vary, the authors observed certain common patterns and themes, owing to the common gendered structures they encountered in society and their resistance to such structures. The authors employ these gendered journeys to make two sets of observations. The first is that their childhood and young adulthood experiences of encountering gender in both academic and non-academic spaces and the choice of discipline seem to have co-impacted each other. Gender, by shaping their identities, has also inevitably shaped their choice of discipline. The second set are observations made from their experiences as students in sociology and women’s studies in both feminist and non-feminist classrooms.
