ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses upon self-awareness and empathy as being foundational EI capabilities and seeks to clarify what both of these terms mean. Arguably, without self-awareness and the capability of recognising the needs of others, our health- and social-based interventions are significantly less effective. Additionally, our ability to work and get on with others in team and work units is connected to our ability to accurately perceive aspects of self, and of other people. IQ alone will not be enough to be completely effective in either of these work areas. Hence, this chapter explores a variety of approaches to understanding and potentially enhancing self-awareness and empathy.
