ABSTRACT

Psychoanalysis in Colombia can be divided into four distinct stages. Several internal factors related to the development of social science in general, and sociopolitical events in the world, especially the First and Second World Wars in Europe, have influenced these stages. First Stage: This period starts at the end of the nineteenth century and finishes at the beginning of the post-war years, with the publication in Spanish of Freud's works and then, later, with the arrival of two pioneers trained in analysis. Second Stage: The next period saw a process of psychoanalytic development, beginning with the formation of the psychoanalytic group. Third Stage: This period began in 1959, when Dr Carlos Plata came from Argentina and formed the Psychoanalytic Institute. Fourth Stage: This period, from 1962 to today, has been characterized by organizational reforms in the Society, and by scientific productions. The Colombian Psychoanalytic Society was approved by the International Psychoanalytic Association in 1961.
