ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how one patient has been able to develop a sense of her own identity over against an image of a damaged mother with whom she had been unconsciously identified and how, together with this development, the image has changed. The images constellated feelings she had apparently repressed; through the affectiveness of the images we were able to develop a language which seems to have led to the possibility of the feelings being re-integrated. The scorched-earth and blitzed-site imagery seemed to correspond with the gaps in the house and in her memory and possibly had its origin in the fire that had broken out in her home, which, in her mind, was synonymous with the separation of her parents and with her being sent away to school. The feeling appears to have been around her own conflict about her parents.
