ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that, at the level of the unconscious mental dynamics, these views originate from forms of relating with the world that are manifestations expressive of the nature of the existing relationships between internal objects. It begins with the patient's dream and then utilizes this material to reflect on the dream's unconscious meanings and their relation to the potential attacks on linking that these reveal. This dream happened after a session in which the patient—whom we will call Lucia—said that she had refused to make an executive decision in her work due to her ethical principles. The patient argued that, inflation being very low in Brazil at the time of the session, no raise could be justified beyond a simple readjustment in accordance with the inflation rate reflecting this. Increases in gross value would be immoral within the present economic situation, she thought.
