ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors illustrate the necessary scope of the Re:Start programme to ensure that they work with each child in their context. Essential to the Re:Start programme are home visits. All our therapists undertake Esther Bick's method of observing the infant in his home environment, from birth to aged two. The object of this analytic training is to witness the development of the family relationship and of the emotions involved. Early home visits are especially useful for fully comprehending the impact that the child's behaviours and sensitivities are having on the family, and vice versa. According to Wilfred Bion, "learning from experience" is the most important way of learning. Learning from experience, with an emotional understanding, enables us to bear the frustrations of what we do not know. What is essential is that the follow-up is individually tailored to the needs of each child.
