ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the problems parents can experience when their young child does not respond to them in a 'typical' way, how they often voice concerns that something is 'not quite right' with their child, and how it is important to address these concerns, which may be signs of pre-autism. It discusses the feedback from four families who have undergone the Re:Start programme. The four feedback are from Valentino, Thomas, Celine, and Gabriel. During the weeks of the treatment, Valentino began to "emerge" and had the space to start communicating. His speech, having been virtually nothing, started to come thick and fast. Valentino is now nine years old in a state school with "statemented" support. He is able to communicate and learn, and is always a work in progress—as are all children.
