ABSTRACT

The new forms of parenthood represent a potential revolution with respect to original paradigms of the psychoanalytic discipline. In the twenty-first century, having a child is considered a human right, and the desire to form a family is strongly expressed in groups of neo-sexual, different, sexually unconventional persons. With the emergence of new parenthoods, requirements of an internal order have been established to evaluate a healthy adult project for bringing up a child. The fundamental elements for adequate parental-ity depend not only on external factors, but also on the mental health of the persons exercising the parental function, either together or as single parents. The liberation of parentality represents a new liberation, just as women's liberation did in the nineteenth century; as such, it will have its advantages and disadvantages and will produce conflicts and controversies. It is a challenge for psychoanalysis.
