ABSTRACT

The psychoanalytic approach through the individual and the psychoanalytic approach through the group are dealing with different facets of the same phenomena. The two methods provide the practitioner with a rudimentary binocular vision. This chapter elaborates on the concept of the binocular vision, and to build upon it some applications for Organizational Role Analysis. It follows Gordon Lawrence in emphasizing the importance of the Sphinx for the analysis of organizations in post-modern times. Lawrence deals with the struggle between the egocentric (narcissistic) impulses and the socio-centric impulses (the socialism), which is a dilemma every individual faces. Lawrence applies these concepts to the understanding of the level of thinking in the domain of social systems. When an individual embarks on a search for truth, he (or she) abandons the self's narcissistic and convenient interests. He embarks on a difficult route of meeting with painful truths. The social and political context influences the atmosphere of organizations.
