ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to show how coaching psychology can be applied across cultures in assisting Asian family business owners to develop their business further in terms of succession and ethical governance. The family values of the Asian business owners mean that they may fare better in comparison with the mainstream family businesses in terms of succession. From identifying Mr Singh’s signature strengths, the coach guided Mr Singh to utilize these strengths and identified the business gap in the photography market. A case study is provided to show how Universal Integrative Framework narrative coaching was applied to help an Asian business owner to further develop his business. Major developmental gaps are highlighted and six ethical principles are provided for consideration to be used for business owners and coaches. These are: right, respect, recognition, relationship, representation and responsibility. A minority of these businesses may grow so large that they have a number of family branches with shared ownership control and investments.
