ABSTRACT

A practitioner's approach to formulation is organized around a particular purpose. The "shape" that the enquiry subsequently takes is a direct consequence of how its purpose is defined. Defining the purpose of the work is essentially concerned with identifying what is important for the practitioner and client to address in the journey they are about to make. According to the constellation of key elements in a particular case, establishing the purpose for which an explanation is required may be a relatively swift and straightforward process or a lengthy procedure in its own right. Local influences shape practitioners' thinking both explicitly and implicitly. Local influences also shape the questions it is deemed appropriate to address. As a reminder, purpose comprises a consideration of four main components: the question to be pursued; the expectations of key stakeholders; the role that each stakeholder will play; the context which generates meaning for the activity.
