ABSTRACT
Supervision is about facilitating the therapist's ability to enter the "mundus imaginalis", not only with the supervisor, but also with the patient. Implicit in this approach is the centrality of working with the transference and the countertransference and the use of projective identification as rich sources of communication and shared fantasizing. This chapter outlines some thoughts on supervision as a shared imaginative task between supervisor and supervisee in which transferential phenomena occurring not only between patient and therapist, but also between supervisee and supervisor, can be used to enter and so better understand the patient's inner world. It describes a dual track approach of didactic teaching, particularly important with the beginning therapist, alongside an experiental approach, which is essentially a form of playing with shared fantasies between supervisee and supervisor. Both approaches are essential, but the degree of emphasis the supervisor gives to one mode or another would depend on the supervisee's degree of experience and creative ability.
