ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on two particular aspects of his personal development: gender, and his relationship with religion. He outlines ideas about the need to address core beliefs in respect of colleagues and the therapeutic relationship, making particular reference to culture. The author presents some specific ideas about the utilisation of some of the core beliefs in practice. There seems to be a growing difference of perspective between those people who believe in the establishment of laws and policies based on the principles of anti-discriminatory practice and those who wish for some sort of exemption to these laws and policies based on religious beliefs. Given that family therapy has been a way of working closely associated with group work, there would seem to be a lack of fit between some aspects of systemic theory and practice in terms of the personal professional relationship.
