ABSTRACT

One of the greatest strengths of the Anna Freud Centre has been the long tradition of demonstrating a deeply held appreciation for the complexity of human development and functioning in its approaches to research and clinical care. The development of the Hampstead Provisional Diagnostic Profile and the Index were attempts to arrive at detailed assays of clinical and treatment phenomena while they strove to help clarify, operationalize, and demonstrate theoretical constructs. This chapter discusses questions about additional research questions that may further clarify issues that impact various aspects of clinical care. The guiding principle in each of these areas has been that careful observation and detailed methods for recording empirical data are the strongest basis for developing questions and hypotheses that inform training, research, and clinical care. The work of the Anna Freud Centre and of the Yale Child Study Center has long had an enormous impact on our understanding of normal development, psychopathology, clinical care, and social policy.
