ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author utilizes a case study from his work as an Organizational Consultant in the field of sports psychology. In many ways, role consultancy might be seen as a process of holding up a mirror for the clients to see themselves as others might see them. The consultant's role is to offer individuals a way of examining and understanding how they get caught up in unconscious processes, so that they can learn to exercise their own authority. In role consultancy, the approach taken to helping the client is not by the imposing of "new" knowledge but by developing a better understanding of the "current" and experiential knowledge. The manager is seen as a person-in-role in an organizational system and any attempt at gaining a deeper understanding of the situation also needs to take into account the wider organizational system.
