ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the case of Julia and Susie. Child psychotherapy with the abused children gives both understanding and insight into why this happens and can, as in the cases of Julia and Susie, offer a way out of these painful repetitions. In the Local Authority where author work practitioners have come to recognize that some children have been so damaged by their past that their future development is at risk. Julia was the first child born to Mr and Mrs Evans, an educationally sub-normal mother and a father described as having 'low intelligence'. On one memorable occasion for the author Julia unrelentingly attacked, denigrated, and humiliated 'the babies', attacked the mother-doll's breasts with the sharp point of a pencil, and forced a sharp scissor between the mother-doll's legs. Julia improved beyond recognition in her school work, allowing some of her imaginative and creative abilities to be harnessed to tasks outside her consuming fantasies.
