ABSTRACT

Sophie presented for counselling looking for support and a place to express her feelings. Six months earlier she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) and was gradually coming to terms with the diagnosis and what it meant for her life. She is forty-six and a manager in human resources for a large company, quite a demanding job. There are internal politics and some challenging personalities at work that she finds stressful. An added dimension to the difficulties Sophie was experiencing was that she had a phobia about needles, and treatment for MS meant that she frequently had to have injections. Work had continued to be stressful and she had a new boss whom she found quite difficult to work with. She had had moments of feeling quite down, but connecting with a new church community had helped her.
