ABSTRACT

Love is variously described as a deception, an illusion or a narcissistic construct. Freud must take some blame for the downgrading of love. He initially emphasizes the transference love in its production of a resistance to free association and the continuation of analytic work. The Sassurean structure by contrast, designated the sign as the unit of language. The signifier represents the subject whereas the sign represents some thing. At times this sign can be construed as functioning outside of human discourse. There is no natural sign in human discourse. Humanity is of a different order and cannot return to the world of the natural sign, anymore than to the free range of unimpeded sexuality.
