ABSTRACT

In the UK, the Medical Research Council is currently funding research in order to examine approaches other than Randomized Control Trials that bodies such as the National Institute of Clinical Excellence might consider. In contrast, however, there are arguments that the current directions of research in the psychological therapies are helpful. One aspect of the rapid development of cognitive behavioural therapy which is highly seductive is its apparent ability to incorporate anything that research has proven to work. Doctoral-level research can be helpful in developing thoughtful practice in the psychological therapist, but this cannot be achieved with narrow notions of evidence as its basis. The chapter examines some implications of post-existentialism for research in the context of the psychological therapies in the twenty-first century. It has been argued that, despite criticisms, it may be essential that the implications of post-existentialism are considered for all existing modalities of therapy.
