ABSTRACT

This chapter presents fact of "transference", which provides an explanation of so many striking phenomena in the mental life of neurotics. The task of psychoanalysis is to detect the existence of isolated parts of the mind, and to help in integrating them with ego in the expectation that the ego strengthens and is able to exist in a less threatened state. Psychoanalysis started from clinical need to find a treatment method for hysterical symptoms. However, an accentuated tendency to feel shame is an important disturbance in the process memory. It leads to both a higher risk of becoming paralysed by shame and many forms of anti-sociality in order to protect oneself from the stupor. It is necessary to listen to the patient through the analyst's own impressions, and to generalize this also to the area of knowledge.
