ABSTRACT
This part conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters. The part takes the Russian scholar Mikhail Bakhtin’s view on dialogue and the dialectics of mind and human understanding as a starting point for his reflection on how psychoanalysis may be conceived of in China. It emphasizes that it is impossible to introduce psychoanalysis into the Chinese context without learning about ourselves and also risking change. Psychoanalytic work in transcultural contexts involves a potential challenging dialectic with otherness and strangeness. The part argues that in order to understand one must be located outside the object of understanding and uses the differences between western and Chinese thought in a general way. The Chinese conception of the mind is embodied to a much larger extent in folk psychology than is true in western conceptions.
