ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the link that seems to exist between pregenital impregnation fantasy and the perversions. The postulate is that whereas in genital maturity there is a direct relation between potency and impregnation, in immaturity there are innumerable fantasies that eventually become an idea of impregnation. Moreover it is these pregenital fantasies that in health provide the imaginative fringe around the stark fact of the baby in the womb. Out of this postulate arises the idea that in the immature individual there can be a persistence of pregenital impregnation fantasies, and being exaggerated by a relative block in the developmental process. Further, in male homosexuality these pregenital fixations become exploited because they are the nearest the male can get to pregnancy. For instance, Melanie Klein pointed out that for full potency in the male—boy or man—there must be included the anxiety drive that is clearly described in what she called "the depressive position in emotional development."
