ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes systems-centered training (SCT) to explain some typical problems with meetings and offers practical solutions to optimize the flow of information into and out of the meeting. The process that emerges out of this perspective helps to decrease personalization in meetings and builds a system of meetings that creates the best possible climate for getting work done. SCT emphasizes the importance of goal orientation in how effective meetings work. To the extent that the goal and task of a meeting are clear and that the meeting goals are aligned to the larger context, meetings run smoothly and groups develop a great ability to notice when the work is off-goal. Once people are present and ready to work, the task leader orients the team to the meeting goals, both long and short term. The leader reviews the purpose of the meeting and places the meeting’s goals and tasks within the larger organizational context.
