In the author's experience, before deciding which supervisor to choose it is useful to discuss it with a tutor or a senior colleague. Of course, there is always the risk that both supervisors share theoretical preferences, thus not allowing for variety; however, if the second supervisor is very different from the first one, this can be overly confusing for the candidate. It is very important for their development that they attend conferences and congresses organized by the IPA or their regional, national, or local psychoanalytic organizations, as well as the exchange programmes with other Societies. On the other hand, the author considers that the status of training analyst has been artificially inflated, producing a narcissistic glorifying of him or her and of the relation between the training analyst and the candidate, to the extent of transforming the former into a sort of.
