ABSTRACT

One characteristic of people with Asperger's syndrome on which workers with different theoretical perspectives do seem to agree is their hypersensitivity, though some emphasize the sensory aspect, others the emotional. Children with autism and Asperger's syndrome can often experience their own aggressive impulses as being unrealistically powerful and damaging. Problems in dealing tactfully with the sexual transference of an adolescent with Asperger's syndrome are cogently discussed by Hope Cooper in an unpublished paper. Intensive treatment seems particularly helpful in a condition like Asperger's syndrome: Olivia's treatment illustrates the benefit of increasing from once to three times a week, though after a stretch of intensive work she was able to do well on less. The different case histories from each age group were chosen to illustrate contrasting extremes within the diagnostic category of Asperger's syndrome. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy certainly does not suit all young people with Asperger's syndrome, just as it does not suit all young people without it.
