ABSTRACT

There was much excitement when we started meeting to plan the seminar. Angelo, Ferruccio, Germana, Milly, and I were much taken by the magnitude of the task. For all of us, this was the first time we had organised a scientific event at an international level, and everything had to run smoothly. It is, therefore, not surprising that in the course of some of the preparatory meetings there should have been some tension. Thinking back, I believe our fresh minds and our inexperience eventually contributed to the success of the enterprise. I hope this brief record of recollections and images reflects my feeling of having lived through, with much participation, a highly significant experience, that at the same time was surprisingly simple. I believe this also depended on John Bowlby’s own personality. Also thanks to the presence of his wife Ursula and to their strong bond, he succeeded in offering us, in addition to his theory, a tangible example of secure attachment.
