ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the influence of organisational culture. It presents some of the problems that it creates for those working in organisations. The chapter shows that a practical means of analysing this elusive phenomenon. Organisational culture has a significant influence on the dynamics of an organisation, and it is well-recognised and accepted that any change within an organisation will be affected by the organisational culture. Organisational culture is an important aspect of group relations training and provides an experiential learning opportunity for members to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. The purpose of the intervention concerned organisational stress, and the consultancy was carried out by a team of Organisation for Promoting Understanding in Society consultants. Large-scale interventions must always, and no matter what else and with whom they are aimed at, work in a focused way with senior management in relation to the issue of culture, and the kind of holding environment they have created.
