ABSTRACT

Ralph Greenson, a most prolific and influential writer on psychoanalytic technique, never published anything on the subject of termination. This is not surprising since very little was written on that topic until after his death. The intensity of focus may have reached a peak. There are indications that a reaction to the plethora of articles may be occurring as some authors are suggesting that the importance of the phase may be overemphasized, that termination can occur without a formal setting of a date, that termination is a misleading word and does not reflect what actually occurs, and even that a termination phase itself need not be differentiated since termination is an issue from the very start. There has been relatively little written on the topic of interminable analysis despite the fact that Freud's case of the Wolf Man would fall into that category.
