ABSTRACT

In the course of the first volume of his book, The Technique and Practice of Psychoanalysis, Ralph Greenson cited many excellent examples from his analytic practice to illustrate how various facets of the individual's dynamics are revealed in dreams. Dreams in psychoanalytic therapy are but one of the many sources of material that are used by the analyst to help his patient. In his book Greenson uses examples of patients' dreams to demonstrate where the patient was in the treatment and to confirm or elaborate the analyst's understanding of what was going on. Dreams in which one element is reversed often have other elements reversed as well. Sometimes it occurs because of a dreamer's style and many of the elements in his dreams are reversed. Dreams in which there is reversal of elements frequently deal with passive homosexual wishes and fantasies.
