ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses general issues of locating the refugee experience in the context of theoretical, anthropological and legal perspectives. It deals with specific issues pertaining to psychotherapy with refugees. The book also addresses a variety of issues pertaining to the therapeutic care of refugees including theoretical, clinical, research, as well as applications of therapeutic principles in actual field projects. It offers an opportunity to specialist and non-specialist readers to acquaint themselves with the broad spectrum and rich variety of this kind of therapeutic work that is done at the Tavistock Clinic. The Tavistock Clinic is an international centre of excellence in mental health training, research and scholarship, all based on clinical practice. The Clinic was founded in the aftermath of the Great War and it has retained its commitment to addressing social issues utilizing sound psychotherapeutic principles.
