ABSTRACT

Transgenerational scripts are introjected into the personality through Parent ego states, which means someone may be unconsciously thinking, feeling, and acting in a way that is similar to one or more of his ancestors. Usually the need for transgenerational script work becomes clear after several psychotherapy sessions, although occasionally it can be the initial motive for a consultation. Working with grief and its various stages is relevant in transgenerational psychotherapy because clients need to leave behind their fantasies of revenge or superiority and abandon their judgemental attitudes. For clients in individual psychotherapy, the group work can provide an opportunity to identify themselves with other participants because their experiences can have an effect on others. The intervention described was useful to both the client and other members of the group and demonstrates the power that can be released by integrating individual and group therapies.
