ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes some core aspects of her own journey, and addresses theoretical and clinical tensions she have had to resolve in order to feel grounded in her work. She begins her career as a general medical practitioner (GP) in a low decile community, carrying a heavy obstetrics load and she worked as a part-time clinician at the local hospice, and enjoyed the challenge of doing some extramural study. The transition from working as a traditional GP a MindBody therapist has been a gradual process beginning with her own experience of illness. The New Zealand MindBody Trust was formed in 2004, creating a unique community for the expression of integrated ways of working with health issues. Confrontation is in many instances an inevitable part of working with physical illness in a MindBody way, because it implicitly and explicitly challenges the common understanding of illness.
