ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author argues that trauma and perversion are related recursively at the systemic level of organizations. Trauma and perversions are, of course, related at the individual level of persons, but it is generally overlooked that they are also related at the systemic level. The author summarizes ideas on the perverse state of mind and its presence in work organizations. The perverse state of mind is likely to flourish where instrumental relations have dominance in the society. The author looks at how perverse dynamics can occur amid what might be seen as more everyday and ongoing activities and decision making in organizations. Perverse system dynamics are not the result of perverse individuals as such, but consist of a collective unconscious collusion involving denial and the instrumental use of others. Small, perverse dynamics give way to further perverse dynamics as a gradual slide leads to tacit acceptance of perverse practice.
