ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Sam, who was white Irish. Sam had experienced early separation from his mother, and there were clearly unresolved loss and separation issues alive in him. In addition to the early separation that he experienced, Sam was also an observer of domestic violence, and he had also experienced emotional abuse, deprivation, and physical violence. Sam had a disorganized attachment disorder, which was evident in his lack of emotional and psychological resources to deal with separation. Sam related to the soft toy tiger in the room as his unhappy feelings and to a teddy bear as his happy feelings. Sam would show various fluctuations in his insecure behaviour by climbing on the table and then changing to sitting at the table and wanting to play a game. Through the therapeutic relationship, Sam was able to understand and find meaning in both his internal and external worlds.
