ABSTRACT

The principles of educational psychotherapy can be a foundation stone for a medium term intervention in a normal school setting, offering a training opportunity for staff working with troubled and troubling children and, offering a group of children a therapeutic opportunity, which can promote change. Many children show signs of disturbance in class, in the play ground, at home-time when parents collect them, or at the beginning of the day when separating from home. Depressed, inhibited children make teachers uncomfortable; while noisy, disruptive, violent children may make them desperate. Success in school, a facilitating relationship with a teacher, or teachers, and good peer relationships can support the growth of resilience, where things have been unhelpful in the early years. Children need to know that parents/carers have been informed and have given permission. Parents/carers can also share any questions or anxieties they may have about the group project.
