ABSTRACT

Jones de Lucas presents with a case in which the problem of physical sterility in a patient with intense obsessive symptoms is paramount. The patient's request for help is motivated by her feelings of hatred for her friend who is pregnant, as well as by her desire to discontinue the medication she was taking, as she blames it for her lack of fertility. Psychoanalytic literature emphasises the importance of having internalised a "good parental couple" that presupposes love and a mutual appreciation in order to be able to achieve adult mental functioning. The parents' limitations in containing the projections in a more tolerant way gave greater relevance to the aggressive aspects than to the loving ones. Raising a child requires not only a containing attitude in the parental figures, but also a continuous adaptation that promotes the experience of growth and separation that maturation requires.
