ABSTRACT

Iona and Peter Opies’ research and writing were a significant influence on pioneer children’s folklore scholars in Australia and New Zealand. Traces of the connections between all these scholars can be found in their published work and in the correspondence. Traces of the connections can be found in the Acknowledgment sections of the Opies’ first three books on children’s games and verbal lore. Radio has always been a more ephemeral medium than print. Hence the survival of radio interviews with Iona and Peter Opie is much less likely than those given to newspapers and journals. The cassette, which has better sound quality, lasts 30 minutes and presents a discussion between Iona Opie and me, with the occasional insertion of children’s verbal lore and questions from a female interviewer.
