ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the philosophy and curriculum involved in rehabilitation for the visually impaired. It addresses the issues raised by the regionalisation of rehabilitation and possible strategies that might be adopted for future provision. For adults with visual impairment, social rehabilitation is the statutory responsibility of local authority social services departments. The chapter identifies its main components and the process necessary to identify the appropriate composition and delivery of a 'client-centred' rehabilitation programme. Rehabilitation programmes are of necessity client-based and therefore vary widely in nature, content and duration, although components of each client's programme can be fairly accurately predicted in consequence of a period of initial assessment prior to the commencement of that programme. The action plan of initial assessment recommended the nature of the rehabilitation programme appropriate to a client and provide an indication as to where, how and when the programme should be provided and roughly how long it might take to achieve its objectives.
