ABSTRACT

The Tertiary Service for Students with a Visual Impairment (TSSVI) was formally established in September, 1988 within the framework of Sheffield's unified tertiary system. Consequently, although the in-service program has set sessions the college staff can attend, it is very productive for TSSVI members to attend course delivery or team meetings where the relevant staff would normally be gathered. A typical in-service session would include: explanation of the phrase 'visual impairment' and dealing with the popular concept of blindness. A valuable contribution to the satisfactory progress of some students with a visual impairment has been the willingness of course delivery teams to arrange a technical tutorial. Early notification of an application by a student with a visual impairment means that the optimum structure of support can be ascertained and made available. The Service works on the basic premise of supporting students on courses of their choice.
