ABSTRACT

There is a tight nexus between the two topics Anthropocene and Sustainability. At this stage, the salient feature of the Anthropocene is its non-sustainability. Not only are humans running amok. Humanity as a whole is ruining nature, and at a progressive rate. Finding sustainable ways is not an option: It is the only way of avoiding disaster. The purpose of my contribution is to offer a concept by which we can find such a path toward sustainability. The claims of people as to where sustainability “must come from” varies greatly. Psychologists often maintain that the problem “ticks in our head”, i.e., its solution is in essence an issue at the level of the individual. On the other hand, many politicians claim that sustainability is fundamentally a matter of regulation at the global level. A cybernetic concept is presented, by which the quest for a sustainable world is grounded at all recursive levels, from individual to organizations… to the world. This would be an effective, multi-level solution providing requisite variety for coping with a burning, multi-level problem.
