ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to measure the level of smartness of a destination on the base of five main dimensions: smart people, smart mobility, smart living, smart environment, smart governance and at applying this framework to a 2020 Smart City destination candidate: Turin. It provides important managerial implications because it suggests key guidelines to policymakers in choosing the right intervention on the inadequate areas in order to improve the smartness of the destination and create value for all the stakeholders. The chapter discusses the results in the creation of an index able to measure the level of smartness of a destination. A destination can be defined smart when firms, bodies and tourists interact constantly in order to realize in a continuous way the following activities: data collection about the activities within the destination; and data analysis of tourist behavior and activities within the destination.
