ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a transdisciplinary approach that orchestrates domains of project management, building information modelling, knowledge engineering and building construction based on a shared building information model and construction schedule and facilitated through the new Information and Communication Technology framework. The approach was verified with a field experiment on a construction site where the domains’ Big Data was automatically collected and processed. The Big Data collection was limited to images of the externally visible building elements. A construction site is an engineering phenomenon where many mechanistic workflows interoperate in a predicted manner. The research has resulted in a prototype framework that automatically collects Big Data during the monitoring process and efficiently inspects construction work as it proceeds. Research outcomes are of interest for both construction practitioners and transdisciplinary research domains, which call for applied research that includes participation of many stakeholders.
