ABSTRACT

The study aims to arrive at a better understanding of the phenomenon of caste journals as a response to political and social change and the emerging political consciousness and a consonant process of consolidation of caste identity. From the second half of the nineteenth century onwards a number caste and community journals were published in Marathi. Vichar Darpan of the Kshatri caste was the first such journal to be published in 1860. The desire for a secure position in the transition to a new socio-political environment was expressed through the publication of caste journals. These periodicals attempted to further the cause of their caste men through the raising of public funds and the highlighting of issues of concern to them. The journals such as the Kasar Masik and the Kasar Sandesh of the Kasar jati and the Bhandari Vijay of the Bhandari jati are the focus of this chapter.
