ABSTRACT

Social transitions from one form to another have to be discussed in the theoretical perspective of social formation. This chapter examines the transition of the Tamil region from the early historic semi-tribal situation to the peasant society in the theoretical perspective of social formation. The contradictory structure, ever-intensifying incompatibilities between productive relations and forces of production, limitations of kin labour and the continuous decline of the reproductive ability of the economy faced the inevitable dissolution crisis by the mid-first millennium ce are examined.
