ABSTRACT

Helping individuals to deal with the emotional side of their lives is a critical area in developing their personal effectiveness. Many individuals need help to deal with problems of concentration, restlessness, low attention span and other signs of high anxiety level. It is not enough to assume that placing individuals in a community provides access to that community. It may provide access to shops, to Post Offices and so on, but increasing personal effectiveness and taking control is also about gaining the skills necessary to settle into a community, to feel a part of it, to establish friendships. P. Walsh, K. Coyle, and C. Lynch in their 'Partners Project' attempted to widen the scope of activities of adults with learning disabilities by partnering individuals with young adults who could act as role models, and introduce new activities in a range of community based settings.
