ABSTRACT
South Shields Roman Fort has produced an example of a Roman plate brooch in the shape of the sole of a shoe. A recent study of this type of brooch has identified the different sub-types produced, and studied their distribution within Britain. This chapter compares the shoe brooch with other plate brooches made during the same period and discusses their possible function and significance, both as originally intended and as actually used.
