ABSTRACT

The parking experience in the future will be quite different from what it is today, as will be the way in which parking resources are managed. This is a time of rapid disruption in city management, transportation, and parking. Everything is changing: factors that affect the amount of parking used, the way in which it is accessed, the design of parking facilities, and parking management tools such as dynamic pricing. Since there is uncertainty about how these trends will play out and interact, parking professionals must be adaptive and creative. It is vital for the parking industry to be ready for a range of future conditions. New management systems, new information systems, new payment systems, and a different parker experience will be the norm. The parking industry is at a mid-point in this revolution in practices. While the future cannot be predicted, what is sure is that we are at a point of rapid change. Parking professionals will benefit from monitoring broader social and economic trends, tracking the diffusion of technology into the parking industry, and proactively testing and adopting new technologies and techniques.
