ABSTRACT

Parking is not traditionally a topic that comes to mind when considering sustainability. However, there are many opportunities to consider and incorporate sustainable elements across the parking and transportation industries as a land use, building type, and form of transportation. Opportunities to consider sustainability in parking planning and design include reduction of pollution through transportation demand management strategies and providing incentives to reduce vehicle miles travelled, right-sizing parking and applying shared-use principles to reduce the amount of parking built and maximize turnover, incorporating energy saving technologies such as efficient lighting and mechanical ventilation systems, and integrating waste-reduction strategies during construction. The parking industry has conducted significant research, and developed resources including the International Parking Institute’s Framework on Sustainability for Parking. Design, Management, and Operations to serve as a guide to create the most sustainable parking planning, design, and operations strategies possible.
